Obituary of Harry Turner
Died on March 15, 2013 after a long battle with vascular dementia at the age of 88 yrs. Predeceased by his parents Charles and Rosa Turner of Castleford, Yorkshire, England. Survived by his wife of 63 years, Pamela and three children: Charlie (Shirley) of Centreville, VA, Alison (Jeff) of Raleigh, NC and Nick (Nicky) of Pittsford, NY. Also survived by one sister Betty of Pickering, Yorkshire, England and five grandchildren. Born in Castleford, England, he served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
After being stationed in Hong Kong and Japan he returned to England and leaving the Navy attended Manchester University, graduating in 1950 with an Honors degree in Electrical Engineering. His early career involved the development of air to air guided rockets, and in 1955 he decided to emigrate to Montreal, Canada where he worked for Canadair. Two years later he and the family moved to the United States and Harry made the decision to no longer work in the weapons field but concentrate on automation in manufacturing. He worked for Electronic Associates in New Jersey and in 1962 the family moved to Rochester and Harry worked for the Cunningham Company in Honeoye Falls. He discovered Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes and never left the Rochester area again.
Harry started two companies, the first A.D.Data Systems was later sold but the second Cytec Corporation started in 1981 is now run by his son Nick.
Besides his love of electronics he spent as much time as the weather would allow sailing on Lake Ontario with his first mate.
The Turner family wishes to extend many thanks to Cherie, Jessica and the wonderful staff at the Brightonian for their loving care of Harry during the last weeks of his life. Those who wish may contribute to either the Salvation Army or a charity of their own choosing in his memory.
Interment after cremation is at the family's discretion.
