Dick devoted his life to loving and caring for his family. He was a deeply spiritual and holy man. Those close to him were extremely blessed, and always able to look forward to Dick generously offering his seasonal specialties of hand-picked strawberry jam, unique Christmas wreaths, homemade pickles and most importantly his hand written, wisdom filled greeting cards.
Dick’s academic pursuits brought him to the University of Notre Dame (Class of ’57) in South Bend, IN where he received a BA in Great Books, as well as an MA in Mathematics. He entered the Jesuit Seminary in 1957, which led him to a faculty position at McQuaid Jesuit H.S. teaching Math and Greek. His professional journey continued for 3 decades with Bausch and Lomb where he became Director of M.I.S.
Dick retired in 1997 which allowed him to attend daily mass, grandchildren’s birthday parties, make use of his Notre Dame season tickets, trout fishing boundary waters in Minnesota, cultivating his numerous gardens and flower beds while always generously giving to his community. His life was one of faith and service to God. He gave much, asked for little in return, and always kept his priorities in clear order. May his sacred beliefs of God, family, country, and Notre Dame remain with us forever. Go Irish! Richard A. Leitten pray for us.
