Roger O. Austin
Rochester: October 5, 2009. Roger was born in Malone, NY on May 23, 1919 to Chester Marion and Florence O'Neil Austin. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Stuart O. Austin. Survived by his adoring and devoted wife of 61 years, Phyllis Vollertsen Austin; son, Stephen; daughters, Michele A. (Nicholas) Zuck, Alyson Austin (Benedict Smith) and grandchildren, Carley Smith, Kaelen, Brieanne and Rigan Austin.
Roger was a graduate of Cornell School of Architecture and served as an U.S. Army Combat Engineer during WWII. He subsequently joined the archtiectural firm of Kaelber & Waasdorp, later becoming a partner. He led the design of many prominent local buildings including the Community War Memorial. He also served as the University Architect for the UofR where his work included Hoyt Hall, the Graduate Living Center and was an advisor to their future Master Plan. In 1960, he founded the Winross Company. He was an avid collector of books and art, a 50-year member of the University Club and cherished his Adirondack Heritage. He recently wrote and published a memoir of his war service in France and Germany. The family gives heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hastings II for his compassionate and respectful care over the last 2 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's Home, 150 Highland Ave., Rochester, NY 14620 in his memory.
