Years ago, when I transferred to RIT, I met Ed at the Interfaith Chapel in the time of the late Fr. Jim and Sister Shirley Pilot. This trio supported me through a tough personal transition and also kept me laughing. Ed in particular. He always greeted me by saying "Your Emminence" and preferred that I respond with "Your Grace".
With a twinkle in his eye of course.
I had just thought of him when back in Roch for my mother's funeral and was so saddened to see that he had passed away. He was such a treasure personally and for RIT. He added warmth to what felt like a large school to me and I'm grateful to have known him.

I'm very sorry to learn of Ed's passing today. I'm sure he will be deeply missed by all that were close to him. Professor Steffens possesed a unique way to connect with his students and made learning fun. You wanted to be in his classroom. Outside of the classroom his office door was always open and he never refused you. Even if it was just to stop in and chat about fishing in Canada. I will gladly remember him in my thoughts.

Ed had the gift of sight at the speed of light. I was always amazed by his ability to cut to the heart of a problem quickly and without malice.
His humor and presence were always entertaining and without malice.
A truly great mind and soul.
