Jack Brooks, better known as “Papa” in our family, was my father-in-law for the past 18 years. He and Gail have both always treated me like family, and this is a very special one – one I am honored to have been married into. Jack was my go-to person for many things, but particularly for home repair – a skill I severely lacked in when Kristin and I were first married and that I am forever grateful for his guidance. With time and patience, he taught me the basics of electrical wiring, “throne” replacement, flooring, and other things – and he always did so by making me do it myself with his oversight. He and I also shared a love of Hollywood action and sci-fi – we often went to James Bond, Star Trek, and Superhero movies together. The Brooks family is built on faith, family and friendship – and Jack was instrumental in all that. He shared what I would call a “quiet faith” – praying in private primarily, but with a strong love of God. With friendship, it was great to see how much he enjoyed his “Friday Night Gang” of friends and many others. But the thing that everyone has always seen is his impact on the family. You could see his love and pride when he looked at his wife, his girls, his 11 grandchildren, and his sons-in-law. “Outsiders” often commented on the family strength, right up to his last days at the hospital in how the staff witnessed this crazy, funny, sometimes-too-loud gaggle of people love on him singing James Taylor songs and with words of hope and encouragement. They were in awe. We were just being the Brooks family. I miss you Jack.
