Obituary of John J. Courtney
John James Courtney (Jim), 91, passed away June 18, 2014 in Naples, Florida. He was the last child born to the late Edward James and Eleanor Sullivan Cody Courtney on
February 5, 1923 in Silver Springs, New York.
As youngest children often are John was mischievous and full of fun ready with a quick joke or a witty one, traits that followed him throughout his life and endeared him to his family and friends.
After high school graduation John was extremely proud to serve his country along with his brothers Gordon, Leo, and Edward in the U.S. Army during World War II. Those brothers and his sisters Eleanor and Mary predeceased him.
John and his brothers received a hero’s welcome when returning home and his gregarious nature caught the attention of Betty Higgins of Warsaw, N.Y. The couple married May 27, 1950 and was inseparable for 64 wonderful years. Others often commented on the closeness of the two; you rarely saw one without the other.
Betty survives John along with his daughter Coral Courtney Jones and son-in-law, Wayne Jones, of Naples, Florida. His son, James Edward Courtney and daughter-in-law, Dawn of Marion, N.Y. Two grandsons, James and wife, Cassandra and Matthew of Rochester, N.Y. Three step-granddaughters; Karen Pudetti and husband, James of Pittsford, N.Y.; Diane Iorio and husband, Paul of Greece, N.Y. and Linda Wilcox and husband Justin of Brighton, N.Y. Great grandchildren include; Angelina, Luke, Dylan, Owen, Eli, Penelope, Matthew, Alexandra and Katlyn. Great step-grandchildren include Taylor, Payton, Matthew, Jeffrey, Nicole, Evelyn and Brennan.
After a career spanning over 35 years at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y. and many years of happy retirement “Dad and Mom” moved to retirement community Aston Gardens in sunny Naples, Florida in 2011. We’ll greatly miss his infectious humor and warmth and will keep the sign he hung in his apartment “Laugh at Every Joke.” as an endearing reminder of a man well loved and well remembered.
Calling hours will take place at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 South Winton Road, Rochester, NY on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. A prayer service and remembrance will be held from 5:30 to 6:00
