I don't think that I can say it any better so I will quote Declan " I am just remembering all the fun times I had with Mr. Foley". We too will miss Dave, especially on Christmas Day. It won't be the same without Dave dropping by with noise toys for the boys and the occasional light saber battle with "uncle Foley".

As a single parent, I moved my children and I back to Rochester, in 1995. After being away from this area for over 15 yrs, I wasn't sure how everything would work out. I was told by a friend that I should go meet Dave Foley, who just opened up a Ventilator Unit, at Highlands at Brighton. The interview was like no other I had in the past. I drove home to the phone ringing. It was Dave. I was hired, and from that time on, he became a very special person in my life. I couldn't be around Dave without a smile on my face. He made such an impact on me, that he will be in my heart forever.

Dave's encouragement to pursue higher education was invaluable to me, and I am committed to paying this forward every opportunity I get. 2 years ago Dave introduced me to my new neighborhood, the Southwedge on St. Patrick's Day 2008 at Caverly's with a pint of Guinness and a shot of Jameson's. A non beer drinker until then, I have been drinking Guinness ever since.

With having over 30+ years in RT, I know there are names that we all know from our great profession here in NY. Dave Foley was a name that stood out amoung the others. Working with Dave in the WNY chapter on the board showed me at close hand Dave's energy and charisma. Even knowing him through the years at his many posts, and mine, our paths crossed many times. His connversation, attitude, leadership, and wisdom shined in his special way. A bit of a rough-edged man who cared about his staffs, his profession, and his patients, a true giant in our field, whose image will carry on in our hearts and minds.

Dave was a tremendous person, with a great though somewhat warped sense of humor. He’s the only person I’ve known who could speak fluent Vulcan, and over the past few years, I believe I have heard every Irish joke ever created. Many of them you could substitute Dave’s name into, and they would be completely believable. He also had as much fun being the victim of a practical joke as those who played them on him. I don’t believe he ever figured out how to get “No more monkeys jumping on the bed” off his computer. Humor aside, Dave was also extremely smart and compassionate person, who valued education. It was because of his pushing that I returned to school. Over the years I have known him, he became not only my boss, but a good friend as well. Through him, I have developed a taste for Jameson’s, but I’m still working on the Guinness. Dave, I will miss your advice, your friendship, and the fun we had at conferences. Till we meet again.

Dave was the most unique human being that I have ever met, a person who was known and loved by literally thousands of people, but completely understood by only a chosen few. Boss, mentor, comedian, counselor, advisor, friend, and brother: How do I possibly start to describe a man who was so much larger than life? The stories I could tell of his antics and adventures at various dinners, social events, and Respiratory conferences could easily fill a novel, and I am sure that every single person who ever met Dave has had similar experiences with him. What I want to share is a little insight into the real Dave, when he was not on stage, when his guard was down and his true colors could show (and yes, they were Irish green). His intellect and sense of humor were honed sharp as a knife (well , at least after 11am, before that , Not so much), and his compassion and generosity were endless. I have known Dave for only a short seven years, but have learned more about life from him in that time then I had in my previous thirty years. As a boss he was caring and compassionate. Never the micro manager, his style was laid back but effective. He expected things to be done right, but allowed us the freedom to achieve goals on our own. He would truly listen to you, taking your concerns into consideration before making a decision. I was truly lucky to have Dave as a boss and a mentor. As a person, even though he was an obstinate democrat, he was in reality a extraordinary human being. Dave would give you the shirt off his back or his last dollar in a heartbeat. A man with a heart so large and generous, that it was almost a fault. He truly wanted to please everyone, regardless of the cost to himself. Dave always made sure everyone was ok, always called and visited when people were sick, always the first to start up a fund to help out. If he gave you his word, you could count on him 100% (Unless it was to drive you home after a “Pint or two”). He will be greatly missed by many.
One of our more affable saying to each other would go something like this: Dave would say to me “Brian, you’re going to hell for that one”, and I would laugh and reply “I’m sure you will be there to greet me when I do”. I have no doubt that Dave is heaven, happy and at peace, and I hope he will greet me when I get there someday, with his warm smile, great sense of humor, huge heart, and pint of Guiness.
Dave, I‘ll miss you buddy. May your eternity be magically delicious and your tequila be only Petrone.

Listening to "Danny Boy" as I write this, in your memory. I keep thinking, Dave is gone. And the world seems a little emptier because of it. You had countless friends, and that is a testimony to the kind of man you were. EVERYONE loved Dave Foley. To say you were the life of the party is to miss the point. You were the warm, friendly beacon that drew everyone to a comfortable, welcoming spot where they could always be themselves. A real joy to be around. As everyone else, I will miss you. I am glad you are reunited with your parents; I just wish it were 30 years from now. My sympathy to Patty, Danny and Connor for this loss. I hope they know he has a place with God.

Dave. I am having a hard time believing you are gone. You were one of the most genuine people many of us will have the privilege of knowing. Your humor was dry and quick and fantastic. I know that your friends and family can fill volumes with your jokes, and quotes and quirky saying. I admire the great love you have for your family. I will always appreciate the support you have given me over the years as I left Unity to begin a new career. How many times did I call you and ask you how crazy I was and you were always ready to confirm, “Yes, You are crazy.” I will miss you, Dave Foley.

I know I speak for our department, Dave was a wonderful colleague and teammate and always brought his "Irish sense of humor" with him. I should know my maiden name was Foley. Please accept our profound sympathy. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.

Patty, Daniel & Conor,
My deepest sympathy on the loss of a wonderful man, Remembering the good times & the love he shared, he will live on in our hearts.
A tidbit on how David and I knew each other. It all started in first grade at 24 school. The brat that I was, wondering... why do I have to share my birthday celebration with another kid in the class. It wasn't just any kid it was Dave. Not only did we share the same birthday we had the same teachers every year for grammar school. Every time we had show and tell Dave would always bring in his Indian pictures. It wasn't just a few times it was ALL the time. As we grew older and hit middle school and high school. We still managed to have the same home room teachers. The funny guy that Dave was, he would always send me a birthday card with an Indian on it. Phone calls, Indian cards, this has gone on every year. Looking ahead to our 50th birthday in March I had been in search of the perfect card with an Indian on it. While traveling across country this summer I found the perfect card in New Mexico. Sorry that I won't have the chance for Dave to see it. (Patty don't be surprised if it shows up in the mail)
Birthdays will sure be strange without Dave's phone calls and silly cards. But he will be in my thoughts.
He will be dearly missed.
With sympathy,
Sandie Cunliffe Dron

David...."a good egg"....how many times did I hear you describe others that way? You were the only guy I EVER let call me "Dear." You were larger than life, totally genuine, one of the funniest people I have ever met, and a loyal and generous friend. I am sorry I didn't get to tell you good bye. Our community has suffered an enormous loss. To Patty, Danny and Connor....my love and prayers....please reach out to us.
