My Aunt Vicky. She was a caring, loving, tough, independent, and resilient woman. She was all of these things and so much more. She was a woman of her time.
I have many memories of her but one stands out above the rest. Every year, as a child, I would go up to her house on Faircrest and spend the day/night. It was just the two of us and I felt so lucky, so special, so loved. We would go see a movie and then go to dinner at Margie's on West Henrietta Rd., our usual spot. Then we would go back to her house where we watched Jeopardy and played gin rummy. It was a perfect day in my mind. When the day was done, I would lay down in bed and stare into the orange night sky that covered Henrietta. I would think about our day and everything we talked about and how everything was just as it should be and I was calm. The feeling was the same every time. I had this feeling of stability and safety. It was the way we feel with family. With love.
Of course, this is a bittersweet post because the loss is so new. The burden of grief is a hard part of life but it symbolizes our profound ability to love so deeply.
Aunt Vicky, I love you and I hope you are having a good time in heaven! My thoughts and prayers are with everyone.
