On behalf of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., School No. 9, faculty, staff, parents, and our children, I express our greatfulness to be part of Bertha's life story. She dedicated her heart and life to ensure we had opportunities to learn how to swim. Bertha gave no only her time but personal resources to support our students: for example, the Penny Dive. Out of the pool, Bertha tutored our youngsters in reading and math. Bertha was a member of our school community who we cherished and loved. Finally, and most importantly, we will keep Bertha in our hearts.
Sharon E. Jackson, Principal, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School No. 9

I remember my first visit as an inspector to Clinton-Baden's pool back in the early 1990's. Bertha was guarding a group of kids. She promptly blew her whistle to call a fire drill and the kids hopped out of the pool and got in line. It was obvious that it wasn't their first time doing this! I knew the impromptu drill was totally for my benefit, but it was clear that Bertha ruled the pool and you could see that the children respected her.
My fellow inspectors that encountered Bertha over the years have stopped by to share their "Bertha stories".
We are lucky in Rochester to have a few "lifer lifeguards" who have committed their lives to teaching kids to swim and keeping people safe in the pool, but we have one less now. She has left her mark on the aquatics community and in the countless kids (many now adults!) that she taught. I'm going to miss seeing her at the pool.
My condolences to the family. She was very special.

The passing of a loved one is NEVER easy! Although she has physically moved on, we believe she is in a better place. Suggest the most important message of the formal memorial service is NOT to focus on her passing, but to celebrate her life .... nobody can take away the love or the memories that will be with you FOREVER! From Colorado Springs, our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected by this moment ... especially Patty, Matt & family!

I have known Bertha since the early 1980's as an employee with the City of Rochester. She has always been a great asset to our youth and adults throughout her career in Aquatics, both with the City, the School District and Baden. Many lifeguards and swimmers have learned to be the best that they could be under her tutelage. I have had the pleasure to assist her in her aquatics needs at Clinton-Baden. I am also eternally grateful for her friendship she showed my cousin Michael Tarzia(who past away this past year) and my Aunt Barbara, Michael's life-long passion of swimming continue to flourish during the past 20 years at Baden with his Mom. They thoroughly enjoyed their visits to the pool at Baden and cherished the opportunity to swim at that facility.
God Bless!
