I'll start by thanking whomever replied to the e-mail that I sent Andy on Groundhog Day for his/her courtesy. I reach out to Andy only once a year, so I had no idea. My condolences go out to Jo and the rest of the family.
My most memorable anecdote involving Andy is, perhaps, the 1998 Behrend plastics alumni where-the-heck-is-the-darn-picnic motor tour. I had just started a job out of state, so my snail mail was being forwarded. I got my invitation and paid the fee; Andy didn’t bother to do that. The picnic was to be held at a student’s house in a little rural town some distance outside of Erie. (I can’t remember where.) I knew from the get-go that there would be a problem if the location was changed at the last minute. But what were the odds of that happening? As it turned out, they were 100 percent.
I arrived in town and drove my rental car to the far end of the main drag where I turned around. About a minute later, I fortuitously spotted Andy standing next to his car looking somewhat perplexed. Jo was sitting in the car. (I think one teenage son was there too, but I can‘t remember that either -- sorry guys.) It took about an hour of driving back and forth, consulting a phonebook at a roadhouse bar, fruitlessly dialing, and help from the locals to find this house. It was at the edge of town and set back from the road. The house number was either poorly visible or nonexistent. The place was deserted, and there was no note on the door.
We decided to go to the little park where the picnic was held in 1996 -- somewhere in the vicinity of Mooreheadville. Someone’s picnic was in progress, but it was not our picnic. At this point, the day was pretty much over, so we admitted defeat and went to the Hoss’s on the other side of Erie. That was the last time that I had the privilege to be in Andy’s company.
Andy was my one-man fan club. He would say things like, "Wait; you mean you helped me get through that course, and I end up with the better grade? That's not right." And, "Gary’s the only one in the class to get an answer to (Bob) Farrell’s homework question." Andy really did like me, and he was genuinely perplexed by my sub-par level of success.
Rest in peace, Andrew Walter Cappella.

I am so sorry to hear of Andy's passing. What a great guy! I haven't seen him in years but have many great memories of our college days. I learned as much from him as to how to be a good, honest, hard working person as I did in our college classes.
My condolences,
Dave Berry

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Andy. I am very sorry for your loss. He will be missed in the plastics community. It has been so many years that we met while I was providing support at Moldflow, he was always very kind to me. May his memories stay with you and help you cope with his departure.

To Andy's family and friends,
I want to offer my sincere condolences to you all. I knew Andy through my time at Penn State in Erie in the Plastics Engineering program and had the pleasure of working with him on some projects in our professional career. He was a great man and engineer, and always looked at life with open eyes in my opinion. My best memory of Andy is when were were in Dallas, TX for an ANTEC conference in 2000. We met up and went drove over to Fort Worth to grab dinner with some other friends and colleagues. I talked about always wanting to ride a bull. My thought was a mechanical bull, but we could not find any place that had a bull...which was hard to believe considering we were in TX. After dinner, we sat watching the hockey playoffs while Andy and a few others went for a walk. Soon after, they came in and grabbed me and said they had a surprise for me. Outside was a Texas Cowboy with a LIVE BULL! I didn't get to "ride" the bull but I did get to sit on it and get my picture taken, thanks to Andy. And when I went to visit him at Kodak for a meeting a year or so later, he started off the meeting with a PPT presentation and the first slide was the picture of me sitting on the bull and I laughed so hard. I will never forget that...or Andy.
God bless you all.
