Obituary of Shirley Heacock

Shirley Sutton Heacock, 83, of Canandaigua, NY passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018. She was born in Canajoharie, NY on February 25, 1935 to the late Arthur and Anne (Montainye) Sutton.  Shirley grew up in the Philadelphia, PA area and graduated from Chester High School in 1953 and then earned a BA from Nazareth College in Pittsford, NY in 1976 with a degree in history and education. She was passionate about pursuing education and being a life-long learner. Shirley was also an avid reader which is a passion she shared with her grandchildren. She was always gracious and accommodating for friends and guests and loved spirited late-night conversations with her sons and their friends. Raising three very active sons was a full-time job for her, and she even taught them to drive stick-shift cars and encouraged their friends to learn as well.

Shirley was very active in the church, first at Asbury United Methodist Church in Rochester, NY for more than 30 years, and later at Christ United Methodist Church in Plano, TX. She was passionate about helping families and donated baked goods (brownies) weekly to the house-building volunteers with the “House on the Corner” mission project at CUMC.  She even helped with painting and caulking.

Shirley enjoyed traveling with friends and family; especially visiting her six grandchildren in NY, PA and TX.  She exposed them to a wide world of possibilities, including taking them to museums and the library, and she also enjoyed taking them on trips to the movies and shopping at their favorite stores. Shirley was a wonderful grandmother and always found a way to make her grandchildren smile when she came to visit.

She was predeceased by her husband Earl in 2012 and is survived by her brother Robert Sutton; her sons, Wayne (Renee) Heacock, David (Sheryl) Heacock and Bruce (Sandra) Heacock; six grandchildren; Colleen (Heacock) Burchill, Keith, Emily, Allyson, Madison and Charlotte.

An interment service is planned for 2pm on September 29 at Shrewsbury Parish Church, Kennedyville, MD.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Serving Others at Christ United Methodist Church, 3101 Coit Rd, Plano, TX, the American Diabetes Association or another charity of your choice.
