I prefer to send a handwritten note, but as there are so many family members and addresses that I don't have, I am using this form to convey my deepest sympathies. As many have said, Louise's death took me completely by surprise. She is someone who was a personal hero for me, and someone I felt would live forever. Louise helped me get my teaching certificate in the l980"s when Pa and NY were having a bit of a standoff and after I had tried unsuccessfully for months to get my certificate. She was able to cut through the red tape in a week and enabled me to get my teaching job, in Rush Henrietta, where I had a successful career for 23 years. Whenever an issue which concerned me arose, I would always think of Louise as someone who could do what she could to help. I recently wrote to her about gun violence issues and received a letter from her three weeks ago.
I listened to the entire funeral service and was touched by the remarks of John Lewis, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, but Even more touching were the remarks by her family--daughter, granddaughter and grandson and son in law. Those remarks showed that Louise was, who I thought she was--a woman of integrity, grit, compassion and dedication. There is not another politician that I can think of who truly cares about people the way that she did. She really was beloved by those who knew her and by those she worked for. I agree that we were not ready to lose her and that she still had more she wanted to do. But she can rest in the knowledge that she did her best and that she was much loved. She will be missed, The family has my sympathy and prayers.

As a native Rochesterian, it was an incredible opportunity for me to intern with Louise when I was home from school one summer. That experience led me back to her team several years later when I found myself back in Rochester and needing a job. I spent a little more than two years working in her Rochester office, but during that time she taught me much that has contributed to the person I am today. In addition to being part of the Congressional district team, she put me on her 1998 campaign team and that provided another wealth of experience that continues to define my career. Since departing Louise's team to join the Foreign Service - living for the most part abroad these past 19 years, I have continued to follow Louise's service in the House and was incredibly happy to have run across her a couple of times in airports. Her passing is a loss for our nation. Not everyone agreed with her, but all respected her. Please accept my deepest condolences - she was an incredible woman, an incredible fighter, and an incredible leader. Sincerely, Rick Yoneoka (U.S. Consul General, Hamburg, Germany)

Thank you, Louise, for all of the ways you supported positive growth in the Rochester area. I want to thank you especially for being a promoter of trains and securing the funding for our new train station. My 97 year old father was an ardent supporter of yours and always appreciated your efforts. He was there when you cut the ribbon to open Rochester’s new station and boarded a train there in January. Thank you for your tireless effort for the people in your district!

Dear Slaughter and McIntosh families,
My mother and I would like to extend our deepest condolences on Louise's passing. Louise and Sigrid met for the first time in the 1990s during a Congressional exchange between the US and Germany, where they were some of the only female Congresswomen. Some years later, I would also be so fortunate to meet Louise, and eventually even intern for her at her DC and Rochester offices. Louise was so generous that she allowed me to live with her and Bob for the summer, a kindness I never forget and I am trying to pay forward to the next generation in my work as an academic at NYU.
Louise was always full of stories; she and Bob did not only teach, but show me, what a successful long marriage can look like. They have always been an inspiration to my husband Eric and I.
With all our love,
Anna, Sigrid & Eric.

I worked as director of community relations and development at Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley where Louise was a member of the Honorary Board. She was always helpful and positive. She loved being a Girl Scout while she was growing up. She told me about her troop knitting socks for our soldiers during WWII. Perhaps that was the beginning of her community service. She will be missed!

I am very thankful for the many, many years of wonderful service by Louise. I knew of her first from my mother as an elected official when the Democrats were in power briefly in Penfield and then as a Brighton Democratic town committee person myself. I talked with her and Bob briefly several times in town. I worked on her campaigns several times and always had a Louise lawn sign. I was most proud that a woman represented me and of all her work and votes for women and girls!!!

A few years ago, I ran into Louise in the ladies room of the Convention Center where she was speaking before a large crowd of enthusiastic Democrats. I told her that although I had lived in Brighton for 35 years, I was finally getting the chance to vote for her in the coming election. She thanked me and said she could use every vote she could muster. As it turned out, the was the year Mark Assini came very close to beating her. I'm so glad I was able to cast my vote for her. She was an amazing person, and I'm so very happy she was my Congresswoman...albeit for only a few years. My mother was from Old Hickory, Tennessee and had the very same drawl. Louise will be missed.

I had the feeling that she wasn't campaigning, she really wanted to meet everyone there.Boy that put us all in a good mood!

Very sorry to hear of this...
With intention that these words of condolence may help speed your healing!...
Less common than it might be hoped, among those who need struggle with differing others, that Louise could sustain through her years here such a high level of optimism, humor, other-acceptance, and graciousness of spirit in the face of all the smallness she met, moves a very high tribute to her... and, of course, to you, her family and close friends as well, who little-doubt, greatly helped bolster and offer grounding for her, as she strove to hold to those purposes she saw of much worth.
...All the very best to you as you now grieve her passing!

Louise Slaughter has been a fierce fighter for equality for women and the entire LGBT community for decades. Her kindness and determination moved the LGBT community forward toward full rights for which we will all be grateful forever. For women and their families, Louise with good humor and Southern toughness, made great strides in the fight for full equality for women. I admired her, respected her and hope in some small way have learned from her how to get things done for people.
To her entire family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please know it is shared with New Yorkers everywhere. With Sympathy, Deborah J. Glick

She was not a native, but the way she advocated on behalf of her constituents in this region you would think she was. I thank her for her leadership on women's issues and for her strong determination to see the Affordable Care Act come into law and for fighting for it against those who would dismantle it. When traveling over the past few months my husband and I were on the same flights to BWI with Louise on more than one occasion. I wish I had stopped at her seat to thank her. She was so intent on reading her newspaper I felt that this might be the only peaceful time in her day and I wanted to give her that space. Sometimes you do not appreciate things or people until you think you have lost them. I saw Louise Slaughter in person only once, in a supermarket, shortly after Congressional districts were reconfigured so that my district no longer had her. I blurted out, "I am so sorry that you are no longer my representative!" She responded with equal passion, "So am I!" After another district revision restored us to her representation, I was determined to communicate with her office and support her campaigns. She always responded, agreeing or persuasively explaining her point of view. She was a voice for all people, concerned with major issues, but also quick to help individual constituents overcome difficulties. She was a passionate advocate for Rochester, for our nation, and for humanity. I am so sorry that she is no longer our representative, our staunch supporter, and our trailblazing champion. We can be grateful for the years that we had her and benefitted from her honesty, passion, and steadfast service to us all. Her influence has been far-reaching and her legacy will continue.

We want to share 2 stories about Louise which I hope make you smile
When we had a house party for her many years ago, she arrived probably coming from another party, maybe having another to go to. Soon after we were all seated mutual friends arrived with their young baby. She said "come to Granny" and held the baby throughout our conversation. I could feel her relax as she enjoyed the baby while she also had an intelligent and informed interchange with the group.
When our daughter (now 45) was in middle school a group of students went to Washington. One of their stops was at her office. Julia was very impressed that Louise saw them personally and held a real conversation with them.
Of course we admire the public side and all she did for issues that matter, but the personal side gives us such warm memories.
Our thoughts are with you. There are so many people she touched and she lives on in all of us.

Unlike many people these days, I haven't had to call, or e-mail, or send letters or texts etc to let Louise know my feelings on most issues, because we shared so many of the same views. She was incredibly hard-working & available - always being sure we citizens back in the district knew what was going on in Washington. I am disappointed that I can not be present to share my thoughts of gratitude and admiration for Louise. I had foot surgery and can not leave the house. I can add to the many wonderful words already expressed.
I met Louise at a fund raiser for Hilary Clinton and mentioned to her that my son was working contract in D.C.and had been thinking about looking for a government job. She immediately took out her pen and paper and wrote down the name and telephone number of her administrative person for my son to call. She was kind, joyous, energetic, and always thinking of others. I feel fortunate to have met her and sad to have her gone. Thank you

Dear daughters of Louise,
I just wanted to let you know I always admired and really liked your mother.
We first met years ago at a 4th of July parade in Fairport where we were visiting friends. We were standing next to each other watching and discovered that we both graduated from the University of Kentucky.
My former husband worked for Gannett and another Gannet executive and his wife invited us to have dinner with them and Louise and Bob. I had been concerned that the public school was not really seeing my son. He was doing well but I was concerned that the school was too institutional. She had just had a daughter start at Harley and told me how much she liked it. Due to this we made a visit and loved it. My two children and one step daughter graduated from Harley. Two grandchildren have attended and one will graduate. I taught there as well as being on the Board and Head of Parent Council.
Her work for the causes I believe in, her example for women in Congress and our country and her representation of our district make me grateful for our area and the nation.
I hope your whole family are comforted by the long life she lived and the many people who have benefitted by her contributions.
Most sincerely,
Nancy Danforth Schraver

To Louise's family—I'm sure you know how much Louise was loved and admired from everything you've heard from others. Her vibrancy, energy, accomplishments and engagement with constituents made us feel that Louise would just go on forever—how we wished! Louise was a giant of the House and we are proud to claim her.
As the mayor of Brockport, I send condolences on behalf of our entire village board. We are in awe of all that Louise did in representing us in western NY, and we remain grateful for the role model she was for women seeking, and serving, in elected office.
When she came to endorse our Democratic candidates for office in the Town of Sweden this fall, she talked about the importance of engaging voters by going door to door. A piece of her legacy to us in local government is in simple advice like that.
We will never forget,
Margay Blackman, Mayor of Brockport

I give my condolences to your family as your mother was an outstanding woman and my grandma Elaine Perkins-Hampton always watched her during my growing up years. She said Louis is a strong woman and she doesn't back down. She has been that in my life as with the case against the city cops for Injuries and shooting my daughter. I hope someone comes along with that is standing and courageous Godly heart to take her place, as no one can fulfill her shoes or pathways she made in her time in office. I just wanna say thank you for your help and Consideration to help me with the gun laws, Excessive Force and Judicial Misconduct with corrupted judges, city hall and abusive cops. I pray that your family be comforted in this time of need. I hate to say goodbye.

Congresswoman Slaughter modeled for us what it means to be a fierce, undaunted and unrelenting fighter for causes that are just and worth all our energy and efforts. She also taught us to do that while still offering one's worthwhile adversaries respect and an opportunity to be heard so that, if at all possible, common ground for agreement could be found.
I hope in my own way to carry on that legacy as I work to be a fierce, undaunted and unrelenting fighter for justice and righteousness.

Dear Family of Louise. I first met Louise in 1979 when I went to work at Alternatives For Batterd Women. We were a brand new organization, one that Louise helped nurture. Over the years, I had many interactions with Louise. I like to think we had a friendship based on mutual goals and respect. When I retired in 1994, I became a full time volunteer for her election campaigns for many more campaign s. In fact she made a commercial in my back yard. I loved and admired her and am saddened by her death. What a wonderful, magnificent human being your mom was. Just so sad. Nina Kalen

The news of Louise Slaughter’s passing seemed to me shockingly unreal: How could this vibrant and energetic lawmaker—always on the side of those in need and serving in the best interests of our country—suddenly be at the end of her high-profile life? Her death is a tragic loss to her constituents as much as it is to her family and colleagues on The Hill. I will remember her as a grand Southern lady who used her intellect, wit and charm as she went about her political life. Her many accomplishments over the years in which she served New York will live in my head and heart forever. May you sleep in peace, beloved Louise. ~ Bonnie Hughes, Rochester NY

To family and friends, I mourn with you and I also celebrate with you the life of Louise. I first met Louise in the 1980s when she was forming her veteran's advisory board. Tom Cray introduced us. From then on I just knew that she was good to her core. Louise and her wonderful staff were always available to help veterans and their families. I served as service officer and later as director of veteran's services in Ontario and then Monroe counties. My staffs and I worked closely together with Louise and her Rochester and Washington staffs on important veteran's issues. Our veteran's community cannot thank her enough the persistent and tireless efforts she made to establish a VA clinic in Rochester. On a personal note, Louise helped my wife and I get through some difficulties with Immigration when we adopted our daughter Samantha from Korea. We cannot be more thankful. Louise always new me whether it be at a veteran's function or in Perinton Wegman's. I know I am not alone. Louise had a big heart and cared very much for all people. I will dearly miss her beautiful smile and warmth. God Bless Louise! Rest in Peace!

I have heard so much about her kindness as a person and fierce advocacy for her constituents. She has long been my hero. I sincerely hope that the young women entering politics today will keep her excellent example as a benchmark for their own achievements in Congress - the Senate - and pray to God the White House.

Dear Meg, Amy, Robin and families,
I'm sure that you are being immersed in innumerable renditions of all the great gifts and actions your mom brought to the world--on all levels ranging from the most personal to that of humanity. One memory that often comes when I think of Louise is the day she expressed to my dad her belief in the power of touch. Ever the skeptical but open-minded scientist, he allowed her to "lay hands" on his aching back. Just seconds later, he proclaimed " Oh my!" As he felt the warmth of her healing touch soothing his pain. I remember her later saying that she made it a point to touch people in her work as a Congressperson. I've no doubt that, through her healing hands and humanitarian heart, she indeed was a positive force of nature in this world. She was certainly an inspirational presence in my life.
Sending much love and wishes for unexpected blessings in this time of transition.

She was a force in Congress and a real role model for so many women speaking out and running for office today.

Louise Slaughter left a tremendous legacy, both as a person and as a politician. She fought so hard and with such commitment for the causes she believed in. I was proud to support Louise in many of her campaigns. She was a true fighter for working people and exemplified the best in politics. A life well lived -- thank you.

Nancy and I had many contacts with Louise over the years. I am particularly grateful for the way Louise welcomed me (and my colleagues from the New York State Bar Association) when we called on her in her Washington offices. Louise always made time for us and greeted us warmly. We could count on her support for our issues: civil legal services for the poor, renewal of the violence against women act, and other issues to provide equal justice for all. As president of the NYSBA 2013-2014, I always took pleasure and pride in introducing my colleagues from other parts of the state to my Representative in Congress, Louise Slaughter. To Louise we say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Two and one half years ago my son graduated from college with a BA in biology and a desire to use science to save the planet and better society but no clear idea how to get started. A three month internship in Representative Slaughter’s office and the opportunity to work with her science fellow gave him a unique perspective on how science could be used to shape government policy. It also helped him land a fellowship with the nature conservancy which led to an environmental studies fellowship at Virginia Tech. I am sure this is just one example of the many ways that Louise helped to shape the lives of those who worked for her. I cannot begin to tell you how important this experience was to my son and how much it meant to our family. Louise was a wonderful person and example to all. I am so sorry for her loss.

Good Morning Robin, Megan and Amy,
My sincere condolences to you and your families at the loss of your magnificent Mother, 'Louise'. Her death came as a major shock to me when I heard the news on Friday. She was a major force of justice and we were all so thrilled that she was going to, once again, represent us in her district. In fact, I had just completed circulating the petition to put her on the ballot in November. As I visited with my Perinton neighbors to do this, people expressed their appreciation for all she had accomplished and eagerly signed the petition. I loved meeting her in Wegmans, and hearing her, in her Southern drawl, tell me her opinions of the current administration. I'll never forget when she said to me "y'know~~~he's crazy, don't cha".I concurred. Your Mom will be so missed!!

As proud as I have been over these many years to have had Louise as my member of Congress, I am saddened at losing her. My condolences to her family.
In 1986, the year that Louise first ran for Congress (defeating Fred Eckert, a conservative Republican who voted more often with Ronald Reagan than any other member of Congress), 6,200 of us worked for her campaign. Two of those volunteers were my twelve-year-old daughter and my nine-year-old son. I remember one Saturday, as we were painting signs in the hall of the Powers Building, Louise emerged from one of the offices. My son asked her if she were related to action figure and WWE wrestling personality Sgt. Slaughter. As I tried to make myself invisible due to embarrassment, the ever-gracious Louise responded, "No, but I am related to Daniel Boone."
A few years later, at a Louise fund raiser attended by Walter S. Taylor, she commented on the fact that Walter S., owner of Bully Hill Vineyards, could not use his last name, since his family's Taylor Vineyards had been purchased by a major corporation, and had gone to court to prevent Walter S. from using Taylor in connection with Bully Hill Vineyards. She said that he and she had something in common, along the lines of "He has a name that he can't use, and I have a name that I don't know what to do with. What type of support groups could we have? Veterans for Slaughter? Children for Slaughter? Mothers for Slaughter?"
A move is on to replace her; that move will fail. You don't replace Louise.

(1) The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
(2) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
(3) He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
(4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
(5) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
(6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

But accidentally, I received a message from you. It was in a mistaken message to my retirement home in Silver Spring, Md. I thought you were a representative to my home, and your nice message resulted in a donation to you.
I shortly discovered my mistake, but by that time I had become enamored of your friendly and pleasant letters which made me feel that, no matter what area you represented, you were a tribute to that area, and I became one of your admirers.
In those few years since, I have made many contributions, and actually read and welcomed your letters.

Her voice , her smile , her intellect , and her heart formed an immediate connection for so many of us that can never be broken. There have literally been thousands of words published in the media about our Congresswoman in the last ten days , all with the important omission of her strong support for workers and the freedom of association to join unions and bargain collectively . Like us in Labor , she saw workers rights and civil rights as the same fight , a life long advocacy for human rights for everyone , no exclusions . No one in Congress , no one , for over a generation had a better voting record for worker and civil rights , even if it meant standing against a President of her own party .
She fought for what she believed was right , regardless of labels or political parties .
For so many in our community , Louise and her late husband Bob were friends for decades . She insisted at being the number one speaker at my retirement celebration last summer , and in spite of her demanding schedule she stayed all night and spent time with my wife , mother , and family .
A life of advocacy requires hard sacrifices by the family and I thank so much daughters Megan , Amy , and Emily, their spouses and their children , for sharing Louise with the rest of us .
Our Condolences and our Love from the Bertolone family .

My family fell in love with Louise when we first heard her speak at the Democratic convention in Los Angeles over a decade ago. My late husband Peter Boyle, a well-known actor, my daughters Lucy & Amy and myself were so impressed with her integrity, her leadership, her intellect and her energy. We agree to host a fund-raiser for her in NYC, the first of a few, that brought her together with our friends who all found her an inspiration. Her fearless voice in Congress will alway ring in our ears and we consider ourselves both lucky and blessed to have known Rep. Slaughter. I hope that other woman can step forward to lead this country out of the black hole we find ourselves in.
We will never forget Louise's contributions to keeping our democracy alive. God bless her always.

The loss of Louise is so difficult to process. She has been a constant in our (her constituents') life for so long. Come this fall, my lawn will miss my biennial "LOUISE" sign.
Louise has been the epitome of an ideal Congresswoman. A true champion of women, the Rochester area and all she represented. Shoes that will be impossible to fill. She championed science and technology, sorely underrepresented in Congress. She was truly loved by the electorate.
I am so sorry for Louise's family! My wholehearted condolences and love!

As Chair of the Livingston County Democrats, I wanted to make sure that the family of Congresswoman Slaughter knows how much we in Livingston County loved Louise. Some of us were lucky enough to be represented by her before we lost her to redistricting; the rest of us always wished she were our representative! As County Chair, I always appreciated that Congresswoman Slaughter and her staff were as helpful as they could possibly be to her neighbors in the red county directly south. It was an honor to have a connection with her, and we will miss her profoundly. Thank you, Louise, for your devotion to our region and your tireless advocacy of justice and equality!

OK, this is sort of a Louise story. Back in the mid nineties, when another hapless Republican was running unsuccessfully against Louise, I happened to be having breakfast at Hicks and McCarthy in Pittsford while her opponent, his wife, and their three very badly behaved daughters were there as well. The restaurant got dead silent as I said to my dining companion "If this guy can't manage three little girls, how the heck does he think he can fill Louise's shoes"? The guy looked at me, looked at his offspring, and began yelling "Pipe down and behave, you three!" LOLOL

Louise was a unique individual. Her wit and passion were legendary. She was a great friend of the Women's TAP Fund, a pro-choice, pro women's issues NYS PAC dedicated to electing women in Western New York. She also was a good friend of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo when she represented the District that included Buffalo. Because of her own background in science, Louise realized the importance of basic biomedical research and visited the Institute many times.
She was a force to be reckoned with and will not be forgotten. She enabled other women (and men) to see that one could engage in the rough and tumble of politics while maintaining civility and a well-honed sense of humor.
My sincere condolences to her children and grand-children.

I have such warm memories of Louise. Some years ago she gathered local clergy for a briefing on what had happened in Washington. She was at her charming best, bringing us all - or most of us - on board. She and I agreed on almost everything, so I began to wonder why I wrote her so many times about issues on which we agreed. I hope she took these messages as a sign of support. She was hard as nails as a legislator, yet soft as a summer breeze as a politician. Her combination of Kentucky accent, intellectual prowess and liberal perspective were unique and quite amazing.
Personally, I appreciated her attending my retirement party as I retired after 32 years at the First Unitarian Church. I was honored at her attendance and by her words. We were lucky to have her with us for so long. I know she wanted to work until the end - and that she did. Thank you, Louise, for being, thank you, Louise, for being you.

I worked in your mom's campaign when she ran for County Legislature and later with her when she worked for George McGovern and was a delegate to the Democratic Convention . I loved her-she was the most dynamic woman I had ever met-she could win you over with the lilt of her Southern drawl and her great sense of humor even if you didn't agree with her.. I was just out of high school during those campaigns but she got me involved in the Democratic party in Perinton which was pretty non-existent at the time. I worked in her home district which was pretty Republican-I think 3 to 1 but we won it-everyone loved her -even the staunchest Republicans would tell you they were voting for her-"Oh, I know Louise, they'd say". And they did- I think she made an effort to know and represent everyone-that was who she was. Years later when I got married and my step-daughter and I were involved in Girl Scouts I invited Louise to come speak to my troop about successful women and their careers. I didn't think she'd remember me or come to the meeting. She was serving in the House by then. Pretty soon I got a call from her office saying she'd be there. She took photos with all the girls and their moms. It was really special. And that was Louise. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for you if you were a friend and she always fought for all of us. No one cared more, fought harder or contributed as much as she did for the people of Western N.Y. than Louise and I'm sure you are all very proud of her. I was a small person in her life but she was a big person in mine. Bless you all.

One of my fondest memories, from her 2016 campaign, is seeing her walk into the Union Hall on East Ave, in Rochester NY, delivering food for the volunteers, and commanding our attention, so she could tell us how thankful she was that we chose to make phone calls, on her behalf.
