Obituary of Penelope G. Nelson

Penelope Graves Nelson died on 4/13/2018, peacefully, under the care of hospice. She was 84.

A local resident for the last four years, she had lived with her late husband Courtney in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Beirut and Jakarta with a home base in Wells, Vermont.

Her children, Sahlu (Mark Theobald), Shelby (Lewis Rothberg), Andrew (Helen), and step-daughter Mary Jo Larson will miss her wry, perceptive observations, delivered in a still-audible Virginia accent from her birthplace in Lynchburg and youth in Lexington. Her love of brilliant colors and bold patterns led her to foster indigenous crafts wherever she lived. She adopted elements of local design into her screen-printed, tie-dyed and batik fabrics, and into the elegant, comfortable dwellings she created.  Everyone who met her remembers her unfailing courtesy, and most can quote some witty remark that surprised them into a laugh.

Friends and family will remember her at a reception between 1:00 - 3:00pm on SUNDAY, April 22, held at 8 Old Farm Circle, Pittsford, 14534.

Donations may be made in Pen's memory to The Lake Saint Catherine Association, P.O. Box 631, Wells, VT 05774
