Obituary of John H. Platt
A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, John Platt, 63, of Caledonia, NY, passed away peacefully August 31, 2018 with his family present. He was born September 26, 1954 in Rochester, NY and resided in Caledonia, NY for the past 9 years. He graduated from Edison Tech in 1974 and received an associates degree from Monroe Community College. John achieved the rank of Sargent in the US Army as a military policemen, serving his country starting in 1973 and honorably discharged in 1980. He also served in the National Guard and Army Reserve Unit.
While John served many roles throughout life, he always found time to help and be with his family. In addition to serving in the military, he worked in a grocery store, a wine tasting room, and a factory.
He was an automotive technician and teacher in Rochester serving multiple dealerships, a rental car company, and bus manufacturers. He supported the Boy Scouts as a scout master, was the chief on a pit crew for late model car racing, delivered a variety of goods from pizzas to secured documents, served as president of the Rochester Commercial Travelers Club, president of the board for the American Legion Post 367, and was a member of the Mumford Sportsman Gun Club.
His favorite pastimes included attending his children’s sporting events, woodworking, and camping with his family. Over the years, he and his wife gave their love and compassion to 173 children through foster care.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Jean Platt; cherished mother-in-law Thelma Johnson; siblings Judy Oberhauser, Carol Knorr, Susan Fertitta, Robert Platt, and Barbara Stewart; son John Platt and wife Lisa Platt; grandsons Chase and Ashton Platt; daughter Nicole Pacheco and grandson Camden Andrest; daughter Ashley Kraska and her husband Andrew Kraska; granddaughter Hannah Kraska and grandson Aydan Kraska; daughter Miranda Platt; son Joshua Platt; daughters Miriam, Gabriella, and Macrina Platt.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Grace Platt, brothers Dave and Dale Platt, and father-in-law Richard Johnson.
The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc. (3325 Winton Road South) on TUESDAY from 5 – 7 PM followed by a small service at 7 PM in The Interfaith Chapel of the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be at 11 AM on THURSDAY at White Haven Memorial Park (210 Marsh Road). Memorials may be made to the Wilmot Cancer Center (601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14624).
