Obituary of James M. Anderson

Anderson, James M. (Humphrey) Victor, NY: Jim Anderson, age 91, died February 24, 2011, after a long illness. He was born in Toronto, Ohio to Julia B. and James M. Anderson, on September 23. 1919. Jim was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth (von Weigand) Anderson; brother, Dale Anderson and sisters, Mary V. McMillin and Maudeline Kavulla. He survived by his wife Carol (Humphrey) Anderson; brother, Charles Anderson of Port Charlotte, Fl; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane Humphrey of Victor, NY, Katherine Humphrey, Herbert (Joyce) Humphrey and Roger Humphrey all of Springwater, NY; many nieces, nephews; cousin, Jean Lang of Sewickley, Pa. Jim came to Rochester in the early 1940's and worked at Bausch and Lomb, until joining the US Navy, which sent him to Polaroid Corporation where his unit did experimental work on equipment for WWII. After returning from the service, Jim formed his first company, a lens coating business in Fairport, NY. Subsequently Jim was approached by Robert Hopkins, PHD and John Evans from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. This collaboration resulted to the formation of Tropel Inc. (now Corning Tropel) located in Fairport, NY. After Jim's retirement from Tropel, he and an associate John Buzawa, formed another company Optics Technology, Inc. which is located in Pittsford, NY. During his career Jim was twice awarded United States Government Meritorious Citations, the first in 1979 and the second time in 2000 which he shared with the staff of Optics Technology. Jim loved sports-cars and over time owned many different models; he was also a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying his own planes. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one's choice, or the Dean's Fund for Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, P.O. Box 270032, Rochester, NY, 14627. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Friendly Home of Rochester for the excellent and loving care he received. There will be no calling hours or service; however, there will be a memorial "gathering" at a later date, at the home/farm that Jim loved so very much.
