Obituary of Ruth Hill Sealander

Ruth Hill Sealander, 88, of Cranberry Lake, NY, and formerly of Ulster, PA, went to be with the Lord on December 14, 2018 at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY.

Ruth was born on May 9th, 1930 in the Manhattan Borough of New York City, the daughter of Charles Ludwig Hill, Sr. and Kathleen Collins Hill.

Young Ruth grew up in Scarsdale, NY where she attended Our Lady of Good Counsel parochial school and high school and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel College in 1951 with a Bachelor’s degree in History.

After graduation from Our Lady of Good Counsel College, Mrs. Sealander married her college sweetheart from Katonah, NY, Sven A. Sealander, Jr. One week later, the two of them departed for Pennsylvania where she and Sven would spend most of their lives raising a family in the village of Ulster. Ruth was very active in community service. She served as both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Mather Memorial Library Board, and was also involved with the Bradford County Republican Committee. She was a member of the Lady Sheshequin Rebekah Lodge, The American Association of University Women, and was especially active with the local Bridge Club. Ruth was an accomplished Contract Bridge card player and won many local tournaments. And like everyone in her family, Ruth was also a water-skier.

After her children had grown, Ruth continued her education and became a licensed practical nurse and worked as a nurse in the local area for several years. Ruth and Sven retired to Cranberry Lake, NY where they built a house on the shores of Cranberry Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Ruth and Sven enjoyed a lengthy retirement in this home and became involved in the Cranberry Lake community. Ruth stayed very active with the local bridge club, the Clifton Community Library Board, the St. Lawrence County Republican Committee, and the Western Adirondack Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Sealander is survived by her husband of 67 years, Sven Aage Sealander, one brother, Thomas (Dorothy) Hill of Cato, NY, four daughters; Karen Canfield (John) of Elmira, NY, Sandra Mayo of Jacksonville, FL, Jennie Sealander of Star Lake, NY, and Constance Vanderhoff of Horseheads, NY; four sons; Scot Sealander (Cindy Inman) of Sayre, PA, Carl “Rick” Sealander (Beverly Weddington) of Mechanicsville, VA, Neil Sealander (Patricia Wolf) of Port Saint Lucie, FL, and David Sealander of Littlestown, PA; nephews Thomas (Nicole) Hill, Jr of Titusville, FL, Andrew (Kiersten) Hill and nieces Kathy Hill of Syracuse, NY and Susan Hill (Ron) Dinapoli of Ithaca, NY.
