Obituary of David C. Taylor
Passed on January 3, 2019. David Christian Taylor was born October 13th, 1959 to the parents of the late Edward W. Taylor and Carolyn Taylor. He is survived by his brother, Mark E. Taylor; Daughter-In-Law, Natalie; Sister, Kathy A. Taylor aka Kat; Nephew, Matthew Taylor; and First Cousin, Scott, Jackie and Steven from the late Jack Taylor, Dads brother. Many close childhood and college friends.
From birth David struggled with a physical anomaly which was corrected with braces, this was the beginning of David’s many obstacles which he found through. In the years to follow further challenges would develop, this being Bipolar disorder, taboo in the community but his truth. It was a daily battle for him which he fought with honor. He discovered the greatest passion which was creating and writing short stories and plays. Many of you may already know that the movie Drop Squad was based on a short story written by David called The Session. This as with many other projects were his greatest accomplishments.
David had a big heart which was shown through his writing and teaching the younger generation about the arts and bring more attention to minorities for further exposure to say “Yes, we can do this”, don’t let your race and or gender limit you. “Dare to Dream”. David did not believe in the word No, only “Let’s get this done. Use all your resources”. He was a prolific writer both fiction and nonfiction. He is a graduate of Howard University Class of 1982, which interestingly was my mother’s 30th anniversary, Class of 1952.
As mentioned, he attended Howard University Class of 1982, BA in Communications. During his attendance he and along with Robert (BJ) Johnson began a video club where they would go around and video various activities and or causes that were occurring on the Yard and within the community. David as I recall videotaped Kappa Alpha Psi in the valley to begin the history of Greek stepping.
While attending Howard he began writing, and his first writing was called The Session which was about the deprogramming of a Buppie, now to remind you this was in the late 70’s/early 80’s. As noted before this was later made into a movie called The Drop Squad which debuted in 1994. This group consisted on David T, David J, Butch R, Leonard T and Eric P. They have remained friends throughout their adulthood.
He won many awards these including Outstanding Young Man of Americas, the Don Belding Award for a Pro-Bono achievement for a Pro-Bono HBO PSA in 1994. His work with Michael Jackson, Hall and Oats, Naughty by Nature to name a few goes without saying. David was a very humble to say the least and not once did all his accolades go to his head. We as a family are very proud of David and his accomplishments.
