Obituary of Nancy J. Washington
Nancy Jane Washington, a longtime resident of Le Roy, NY, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2019, at the age of 83.
Nancy was born on April 1, 1935 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late James R. Burrell and Nancy Anna (Majors) Burrell. She graduated from Le Roy High School in 1953.
Nancy worked for many years at Rochester Telephone Company, now known as Frontier Corporation, as a telephone operator, from which she retired in 1988. After that, she found joy in taking care of and spending time with her grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes were driving around town, taking daily trips to Batavia, and going out to eat. Nancy was known for having a sweet tooth, with a special fondness for M&M candies and cookies, as well as for her love of elephants. Monthly trips to the beauty salon, usually in the company of her sister, Grace Wilson, were a must. She was also known for her dedication to her church. Whenever you saw Nancy, you saw a smile on her face. She always had a kind word to say about everybody, and enjoyed jokes. She was very social and outgoing. She was known as a social butterfly. Most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren, to whom she referred as her “grands.” In her eyes none of them could do any wrong.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was predeceased by her four siblings, George Burrell, Agnes McDaniel, Roy Burrell and Grace Wilson. She is survived by her two children, Torin (Meta) Washington and Bobbie (Terrance) Falk; five grandchildren, Domonique (Brian) McNish, Torin (Katrine) Washington, Tovia Poles, Terry Falk and Chloe Falk; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Friends may call Saturday, March 9, from 1-3 PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., 3325 Winton Road South, Rochester, NY 14623. A memorial service and celebration of Nancy’s life will take place immediately following calling hours in the Chapel at 3 PM.
Nancy enjoyed and participated in the many recreational activities at the Highlands at Brighton, including Bingo (her personal favorite), coffee hours and glamour time. Based on that fact, the family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s name be made to the Recreational Department at the Highlands at Brighton, 5901 Lac de Ville Boulevard, Rochester, NY 14618.
