Obituary of Robert P. Weis

Bob Weis passed away on July 1, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, surrounded by his wife and family. He was 89. He was born on Dec. 23, 1929 in Olean, NY. Growing up with five siblings, he was an avid athlete, playing basketball and baseball in high school. After finishing high school he enlisted in the Air Force and served three years in Alaska during the Korean War as a radio operator. Upon his return he went to work at Line Materials, where he met his future wife, JoAnn Rice. They married in 1956, and he graduated from St.Bonaventure University with a degree in Accounting. During this time they had two daughters, Karen and Jeanne. They moved to Rochester where his son Richard was born. Bob worked at Photostat, Itek and then at Bausch and Lomb as an accounting manager where he stayed until his retirement in 1992.

During his retirement, he and JoAnn spent part of every winter in The Villages, Florida, where a large number of their friends from Olean had migrated to. They described this time as like being back in college, constantly busy golfing, dining out, shopping and enjoying friendships. It was an idyllic 20 years or so.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed visiting friends and family, watching sports and old movies, going on long drives with JoAnn every afternoon for coffee, and golfing. He golfed every week and was in a league up until his death. He loved it, loved the friends he golfed with and loved a good hot dog.

Some of his first words after his heart attack at the hospital were, “Find me a sub for Monday”. His humor was  a hallmark of his personality, and one of his greatest strengths and gifts to family and friends.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife JoAnn, having enjoyed 63 wonderful years of marriage, his children Karen Gray of Winter Garden, Florida, Jeanne Lynch and husband Michael of Southport, CT, and Richard Weis and wife Lisa of Mumford, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ian Gray (Winter Garden, Florida), Michelle Tanner (Manchester, NH), Hayley Lynch (NYC), Meghan Lynch (NYC), Blaise Mitchell and husband Matt (Webster, NY), Seth Meyer and girlfriend Marisa Maier (Mumford, NY), and Clarissa Weis (Mumford, NY), as well as his great grandson Grayson Tanner (Manchester, NH). He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is pre-deceased by his twin sister Betty (Robert) Buffington, sisters Patty (Robert) Appleby and Dorothy Weis, and brothers Jimmy (Betty Ann) and Peter (Kay) Weis.
