Obituary of Doris W. Luckey

DORIS W. LUCKEY

ROCHESTER - Age 89, July 31, 2019. Cherished wife of the late George W. Luckey; loving mother of G. Robert (Valerie), Jana Thompkins (Kenneth), and John; grandmother of Nicholas Thompkins and Alyssa, Evan, Xander, and Jennifer Luckey.

She was born September 17, 1929, to Jay and Edna Waring in Union City, New Jersey, and spent most of her childhood in Rochester.  She graduated from the University of Rochester in 1950 and worked in the insurance industry, becoming the second woman in the U.S. to earn a CLU designation.  In 1958 she married George and, while raising their children, devoted herself to a remarkable variety of volunteer activities.  Doris’s passion for education––public school vocational and technical programs in particular––led her to serve in leadership positions with Monroe County School Boards Association, Monroe #1 Board of Cooperative Educational Services, and the Penfield Central Schools Board of Education.  Her interest in policymaking and advocacy resulted in board-level involvement with the American Association of University Women and St. John’s Senior Services, as well as years of service to the League of Women Voters. A woman of faith, she sang in the choir at her U.C.C. church and contributed decades of service both to the church council and to regional U.C.C. and ecumenical boards.  Doris was a skilled bridge player and ballroom dancer who was rarely spotted out of high heels.  She treasured her circle of close friends and enjoyed applying her considerable executive skills to hosting social gatherings.  In her later years, her love of people and compassion towards others continued to shine despite her dementia, and she was grateful to be able to spend the last years of her life alongside George.

Doris's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 7, at 10:30 AM at Mountain Rise U.C.C. (2 Mountain Rise, Fairport, NY 14450).
