Obituary of Mary R. Mercury

Born August 27, 1921, Kosciusko County, Indiana.  Died at age 98, Rochester, New York. Predeceased by Ottavio Mercury, her husband of 52 years whom she met at the USO (married 1945-1997). 

Her children are Joseph (Celeste), Albert (Gloria), Robert (Marge), Catherine (Fran) and Caroline (Rob). She was the loving grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Alton and sister Devona (two of her eight siblings); many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.  

We especially wish to recognize her niece, Margaret McGrath for the loving care she has given to Mary.

Mary attended nursing school in Kalamazoo, MI, became a Navy nurse and attained the rank of Ensign in WWII.  After her marriage to Ottavio, she moved to Rochester, NY to raise their family and spent her working career as a charge nurse in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s Hospital.  She was a lifelong, avid letter writer, quilter and author of family history, poems and short stories.    

Friends are invited to gather, Monday, October 7th from 10-12 PM at Miller Funeral & Cremation Services (3325 Winton Rd S Rochester, NY 14623 VIEW MAP). Where a memorial service will be held in Mary’s honor at 12 NOON. We look forward to celebrating with family and friends all of whom meant a great deal to Mary throughout her life.
