Obituary of Beverlyn B. Summers

Beverlyn B. Summers of Pittsford, NY, passed away Saturday, October 26th, 2019 at the age 86, with family by her side. She was born in 1933 in Norwich NY to Kurt and Edith Beyer and was the second of four children. She spent her formative years in Norwich NY and graduated from Norwich High School in 1951 as class valedictorian and President of the Student Council. She went on to attend State University of New York at Cortland and received her Bachelor of Science, with a major in Physical Education in 1955, along with earning her Teaching Certificate for Physical Education and Hygiene. She immediately put that degree to use teaching physical education to high school students in Hamburg, NY where her pupils mastered a number of challenging activities from swimming to Swedish gymnastics. After several years in that capacity she returned again to school at the University of North Carolina where she earned her Master of Science in Physical Education in 1960. Also in that year she participated in The Experiment in International Living, where she spent several months living in England and was able to explore a significant portion of Western Europe as well as attend the Rome Olympic Games. Upon returning to the United States she then went on to teach Physical Education at Great Neck North high school in Great Neck NY. During her time there Beverlyn accepted an invitation from Eleanor Roosevelt to meet at Eleanor’s home in New York City to discuss some of her course studies and world travels. In 1961 she married the love of her life, Theodore V. Summers, Jr. Shortly thereafter they departed the tristate area and moved to Pittsford, NY where she resumed teaching physical education in the Pittsford School District.

Beverlyn raised two children, son Theodore (Skeeter) and daughter, Wendy. Beverlyn was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a lifelong educator, getting her start tutoring fellow classmates in elementary school, and spent many later years with the Pittsford School District as a teacher’s assistant for children with special needs. When her husband faced physical setbacks in his later years, she tirelessly served as his caregiver and advocate. Beverlyn was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Pittsford and spent well over a decade there as children’s choir director. Beverlyn loved to read, work in her beautiful flower gardens and root for her favorite team the Buffalo Bills. Travel remained a theme throughout her life, with several follow on trips to England to visit one of her friends there, repeat tours of the western United States as well as visiting multiple Hawaiian Islands. She was also an exceptional cook, with beef bourguignon and cream puffs topped with butterscotch sauce being but two of her often requested specialties.

Beverlyn will be remembered for her love for the Lord, her family and her generosity and willingness to serve others. Beverlyn is preceded in death by her parents Kurt and Edith Beyer. She is survived by her loving husband, Theodore V. Summers Jr., her son Theodore V. Summers III; daughter, Wendy S. Summers; her grandchildren Nathan, Colin and Haylee Lovato; siblings Barry, Brenda and Betsy; her nieces and nephews; along with many cherished friends.
