Kathleen Hursh

Obituary of Kathleen H. Hursh

Kathleen Marie (Hamill) Hursh, a lifetime resident of Rochester, NY; passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 (she was 78). She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was born on July 26,1941 to Thomas and Ottilia (Hochreiter) Hamill, and was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Laurence E. Hursh. She is survived by her sons; Tom (Lisa) Hursh, Mike (Marissa) Hursh, Bill (Ann) Hursh, and grandchildren Tyler, Kimberly, Noah, Ethan, Patricia, Tamara, Tabitha, Janelle, and Oliver.

Kathy graduated from Nazareth Academy and had a Bachelor and Master of Science in Education from Nazareth College. She taught for the Diocese of Rochester, at St. Anne’s and Sienna Catholic Academy for almost 30 years. She is remembered fondly by her students for her dedication and care for their well being. She also served as a Literacy Volunteer after retirement.

Kathy was a devout member of both St. Anne’s and St. Boniface’s parish. Her and Larry served as Eucharistic Ministers and embraced a strong faith. In their spare time they enjoyed trips with the Boniface Twilighters, and gardening. She and Larry gave regularly to several charities and were always helpful “neighborhood and community” members.

As a young mother, she lovingly cared for her children. She even chose to raise them at home until the youngest was old enough to go to school. She also lovingly sewed and knitted many special outfits for her children. She was a devoted wife, caring for Larry after his breast cancer diagnosis, and putting up with his “large unread” magazine collection and messy basement half.

Kathy was an avid reader. She was proud of her Irish heritage and spent many hours researching and cataloguing her family genealogy (a gift to future generations). She was thrilled to be a Grandma and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Kathy and Larry’s home was a cheerful and welcoming place. For many years, she hosted a family gathering every Sunday at her home. “Family” often included neighbors, friends, and even “granddogs.” She enjoyed laughing and enjoyed life.
