Obituary of Tony M. Wong

Tony M. Wong, 55 passed away suddenly on Sat. April 23, 2011 in Pittsford, NY; Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Professor, Clinician, Researcher, Sunday School teacher, lay preacher and dear friend. A devoted husband of 27 years to Lois and caring father to his dear children whom he cherished, Erin & Colin. Tony is also survived by his mother Sim Kuen Ma Wong; 2 brothers, Ron (Violet) & Benson Wong. Predeceased by his father, Don Kwok Wong. Born in 1955, Tony was the second son of Don Kwok and Sim Kuen Ma Wong; brother to Ronald and Benson. He was raised in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles where he attended Dorsey High School followed by nine wonderful years as a Trojan at the University of Southern California earning his B.S., M.A. and PhD. He taught for seven years at Biola University. Simultaneously, he completed his postgraduate training in Clinical Psychology at the Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University. He spent his sabbatical year as a post-doctoral fellow in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1987-1988 after which he returned to LA for three years. He joined the faculty staff of the great University of Rochester in 1991 where he remained until he died. During these years, as he studied, he became board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology as a Clinical Neuropsychologist. His research and clinical emphases include mild head injury/post concussive syndrome, sports-related concussion, brain injury, neuropsychological assessment and cross-cultural factors in neuropsychological assessment and intervention. Tony loved to travel especially with his family, taking them all over the US and more recently to China and Hong Kong. His love of travel was enhanced by his love of eating good food and later attempting to prepare it. He was a wonderful husband to Lois and loving and devoted father to his dear children whom he dearly loved, Erin and Colin. Tony was a diehard USC Trojan football and Trojan basketball fan, who was also a contributing member of the USC “Cardinal and Gold Club.” Lucky for him, his daughter joined the USC Trojan Marching band, giving extra incentive to travel to various “SC” games. He was also a true blue LA Dodger fan, raising his son to love the team and taking the family to occasional games at Dodger Stadium during trips to CA. He was also a Lakers fan, supporting them by watching televised games even if it meant late nights with the time difference (EST & PST). Along with his devotion to work and family he was a dedicated lay preacher, insightful Sunday School teacher, and formerly a leader in the LA First Chinese Baptist Church. In the last 20 years at the Rochester Chinese Christian Church, he faithfully served his loving, merciful Lord. He was known for adamantly teaching us to refer to Easter Sunday as “Resurrection Sunday,” emphasizing and reflecting on God’s unmatched, loving sacrifice of Christ on the cross and rising from the dead on this special day!! This year he was able to celebrate that wonderful day in heaven with his loving Lord.
