Obituary of Helen G. Hanna
Helen G. Hanna
Passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on September 8, 2010. A lifelong resident of Cypress Street in the South Wedge, Helen was born to Ada (Brearey) and George Tuley on May 25, 1920. The loving mother of Bonnie (Gary) Kavanagh of Virginia, David of New Mexico, Thomas (Carolyn) of Pittsford, and Robert (Nancy Miles) of Penfield, Helen was predeceased by her husband David Leroy Hanna in December 1982 and by her sister Enid T. Gardner. She is survived by her sisters Jessica T. Allison of Corning and Esther T. (Glenn) Dutcher of Rochester, and a brother Douglas G. Tuley of Manhattan Beach, CA. Helen is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and an extended family of nieces, nephews and their families some of whom, like Helen, are members of five generations of family to have lived on Cypress Street.
In the last 18 months of her life the staff and her new friends at River Edge Manor and her lovingly devoted caregiver Felicia Green became very important to her.
After a short career as a nurse at Highland Hospital, Helen raised her family and later in life returned to work for Monroe County Department of Human Services. Her great love was time spent tending her beautiful garden, volunteering for the Landmark Society’s Ellwanger Garden on Mt. Hope Avenue, and visiting Lamberton Conservatory of Highland Park. A friend to many over the years on Cypress and Linden Streets, Helen would welcome all into her sunny kitchen for a pot of tea. She will be greatly missed for her common sense, her green thumb, and her warm devotion to family and friends.
