Obituary of Ronald M. Wood

On January 8th 1943, Ronald Marvin Wood was born to proud parents, Arthur and Mary Wood. They raised Ronald and his younger sister Kathy here in Rochester NY. The family lived in Greece near Kodak where Arthur and Mary worked for many years. Ronald was born during World War II while his father’s brother Marvin was in the Army, actively serving in combat in the European conflict. Uncle Marvin would often write home to his brother Arthur with great expectations of surviving the war in order to one day see his namesake little Ronnie Marvin. Ron attended John Marshall High School, graduated in 1961, earning an award of special recognition for a perfect attendance record for all 4 years of high school. By 18 years of age, Ron had already learned the importance and value of hard work and consistency. This same dedication carried over into his 36 years at the Post Office. By the time he retired, he had accumulated almost a whole year of unused sick days. During his final year of high school, he was introduced to the future love of his life, Elizabeth, also known as Betty. The two became instant sweethearts. Ronald’s nature of “stick-to-it-ness” and consistency was put to the test over and over again by his beloved sweetheart Betty. Although very much in love, she did not give in to his continual marriage proposals for almost 5 years. During their extended courtship, Ron wanted to purchase a convertible, Betty would say “oh no, Ronnie, that would not be good for the babies…” he never did get that convertible, but he did stick with Betty for the next 50 years, the two were eventually married in January 1966. That same year, they received news of a soon coming edition the family. The happy couple prepared for the arrival of “Ronnie Junior”. Went on to purchase one crib, one high chair, one of everything … but a surprise was in store. On October 11th1966, which just happened to be Arthur and Mary’s 25th wedding anniversary, Ronald and Betty were excited to learn that there was not just one baby, but two, twin boys. Now what to name the TWO boys ? There could not in fairness be just one “Ronnie Junior”…. The compromise… one twin would get Ronald’s first name, the other twin, his middle name – Marvin (Robert Marvin). Ronald was a loving and dedicated father, often putting himself last, constantly giving to others. His life was an example of sacrifice and generosity. He loved and served his family every day. He retired from the Post Office at 59 years of age so that he could spend more time with his grandchildren. The grandchildren were a highlight of his retirement years. He delighted in taking the grandkids to the zoo, the museum, the ball game, shopping, or just out for ice cream. Ron’s life changed dramatically in August 2010 when he lost his beloved sweetheart to cancer. Ron spent hours every day, over the next two years, in loving memory of his dear wife of 44 years. Ron reached the end of his life, on July 29th 2012, with his family that he loved so much by his side. His gentle smile and generous heart will be long remembered by all those that knew him. Newspaper Notice: Went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2012, at the age of 69, with his family by his side. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Wood.
