Obituary of Margarette Douyon
Beloved chemistry teacher at The School of the Arts died unexpectedly at her home. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on MONDAY, 10 AM at St. Anne Church (1600 Mt. Hope Avenue). Interment will be held in Haiti.
Margarette blessed this earth and her family on March 9, 1954 in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Born the oldest daughter of Luce and Marcus Douyon a true renaissance family. Margarette immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 3 where her strong and independent spirit took shape; her first English words were "put that down". She attended Christ the King Catholic school in Jackson, MS where she was a pioneer in integrating the Jackson Public Schools before mandatory desegregation. Her life and her family instilled in her a strong belief in the power of knowledge as she excelled in her education graduating with honors from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS and the Tuskegee Institute in AL, where she obtained her MS in reproductive physiology. Margarette moved to Rochester in the 80's where she taught science courses at both the middle and high school levels. Most recently she was teaching chemistry at The School of the Arts to both Regents and AP students. Margarette laid a solid foundation for many young students who, until today, continue to keep in contact with her. She was a recipient of many educational honors and volunteered for many organizations, including those that assist Haitian Immigrants and Zeta Phi Beta. Her Passions in life were her family, her teaching and her students. She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family.
