I have only just seen the very sad news. I wanted to express my deepest sympathy to Diana and Bob's family and friends. I had read most of Bob's seminal papers on oral microbiology and fluoride while I was a PhD student 30 yrs ago, and then had the great pleasure to meet Bob, when we were both consultant workers for Unilever Research. I was then lucky and honoured to be able to collaborate with Bob later when I had moved to GSK. Bob was to me the brightest and most fantastic scientist I ever had the privilege of meeting. His generous and courteous nature shone through in everything he did. Again, my deepest sympathy. RIP Bob.

Dear Diana,
This is Michel Koo's wife. Michel and I have been deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Marquis' passing. We didn't meet that many times but I just wanted to thank you and Dr. Marquis for the wonderful memory of you two showing up at our 'wedding' at our humble apartment in 2003. We were just right out of school and in a start up apartment of our own and were sharing some chips and side dishes to celebrate our marriage.... Then you and Dr. Marquis showed up. We remember you sharing with us how our wedding reminded of yours... It was such a sweet, memorable moment for us. Thank you again for showing how life and marriage can be good by your example. Please know that Dr. Marquis' presence will be well remembered and missed.
Warmly,
Bonnie Park

We are deeply saddened and sorry to hear that Bob Marquis passed away. Bob was truly an inspirational colleague, and a wonderful scientist, teacher and mentor. Always kind and available to share his vast knowledge and scientific acumen, yet he was so humble and approachable. Just a wonderful man. Thanks, Bob, for all your support, inspiration, advices and above all, your collegiate friendship. You will be missed by many...Warmest regards, Michel Koo and family

He set a wonderful example for all his students and colleagues. He was a terrific Professor and an amazing family man. Dear Mrs. Diana Mears Marquis and family,
I had the great honor of working in the laboratory of Professor Marquis at the end of 2001 and 2002. This period was one of the most intellectually productive in my professional life and I give thanks to God and to Professor Marquis for the good times at work, chatting in his office at UofR during the evenings and especially the good mood and unparalleled laughter of my good friend who is now in eternity. With great sadness, I received the news that Professor Marquis passed away through our mutual friend Jacqueline Abranches. I send my heart out to you and please know my family and I will pray for you and your family to comfort you in God's peace. God has a reason to all that he does; Professor Marquis will always be a part of our thoughts and will be cherished in our heart. Also, he will be forever remembered by the knowledge that he immortalized in science and education.
Currently I am in Brazil (Piracicaba Dental School, São Paulo) and unable to be in person in Rochester, NY, however we will be in prayer with family and friends in memory and honor of our dear Professor Marquis.
My God bless you all.

Bob had a kind, warm, and accepting personality. His demeanor was always proper but informal. He was also an admired and very dedicated scientist. It was such a pleasure to spend time in his small office talking with him about so many topics. The university and his friends have lost a real gentleman.

chance to interact with when first joined in the department some 15 years ago in Nick Cohen lab. I also had the chance to taste his beer and to speak French together (him with his Quebecois French accent, me with my Swiss French accent). I took him as a model for his passion for science, humanism and dedication to students. I will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to al his family and friends.

My deepest sympathies go out to Diana and the family. Dr Marquis’ mentoring gift to us all was his patient kindness, gentle guidance, and ability to find the positive in seemingly chaotic results. It always seemed, regardless of topic, he could pull a paper from the depths of his office, say, “Well actually…” and put all in perspective. He will always be a treasure to us all.

I am truly saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. My condolences to Diana and their family. Bob and I shared the “GG corridor” at the URMC for nearly 40 years and although our research was in different fields, we would often chat about our department, students, and our life experiences. Together we watched the Department of Microbiology and Immunology grow and thrive; Bob was an integral part of that flourishing. He will be missed.
