Obituary of Arthur Edward Goldfeder

Arthur Edward Goldfeder Rochester: Saturday December 26th, 2015, at home, surrounded by members of the family. Predeceased by his parents, Simon Goldfeder and Leah Cohen and eldest sister Elizabeth Goldfeder. Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elena; a twin brother, Eric (Barbara), brother Marc (Muriel), sister Karin Doyle, sister-in-law Veronica Nápoles; children Simon J., Diana G. (Doug) Stewart, Adam C. (Kristin); and 10 grandchildren: Arthur, Artemisha, Gideon, Gwyndolyn, Jackson, Saylor, Twyla , Davis, Leo, and Charlotte. Arthur is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their spouses and long-time friends from college, Denny Herzberg and Lawrence Strauss. Arthur also had many loving friends from our regional theatre world and also from our many local and ethnic communities. Arthur started working for Neisner Bros. Inc. in 1960 at one of their stores in Florida. His retailing background was earned by working there for 15 years. In 1976, Arthur founded Fabrics & Findings at 50 Anderson Avenue, renting space in a building that used to be the Reed Shoe Factory where he sold fabrics at first and eventually included decorator fabrics and services, arts, crafts and hobby items. In 1982, Arthur and his business associates, and longtime friends Teddy Winkler (deceased) and Morris Sternberger bought the warehouse. Arthur re-invented the building to become what is now the Anderson Arts Building on Goodman and Anderson Avenue, helping start the renaissance of the area by the Memorial Art Gallery now known as NOTA—“Neighborhood of the Arts”. Growing up in Brooklyn, Arthur’s family owned a 24-hour candy store in NYC in the East Village, where Grandpa Nathan Goldfeder concocted the chocolate syrup used in the famous “egg cream” now so well-known to New Yorkers. As a child, Arthur would work at the family store, which is where his love of retailing was born. There will not be a public service, as per Mr. Goldfeder’s wishes, but he asked for a Memorial—“A Celebration of Arthur’s Life”--to be planned for sometime in late spring and to be held at Good Luck Restaurant. It will be a public affair, open to people who knew him, with much joy and happiness and great food and spirits. There will be a general notice sent out as soon as a date is set. Home Rochester, New York Birthplace Brooklyn, New York Donations Donations in his memory may be made to: CURE Epilepsy 430 West Erie, Suite 210 Chicago, IL 60654 … in honor of his granddaughter Twyla M.
