Obituary
Obituary of Doris J. Waud
Rochester- Doris Jean Waud (Miller), age 66, passed away Tuesday October 11th at Highland Hospital after a 7 year struggle with cancer.
Mrs. Waud is survived by her husband of 44 years, John Waud, two sons Stephen, of Burlington, VT, and Michael, of Washington, DC, and brother Charles (Darlene) Miller of Phoenix, AZ.
Doris grew up in Birdsboro, PA and studied Education after high school, receiving her BA from Kutztown University and MS from Lehigh University. After living in several locations, the family took roots in Perinton in 1989. Doris focused on raising her sons until 1993, at which point she joined the Rush-Henrietta Central School district. She taught reading, fifth grade, and kindergarten at several schools including Winslow and Fyle Elementary until her retirement in 2013. Doris loved working with the small children and dedicated her professional career to furthering their education.
In her personal life, Mrs. Waud loved the outdoors and was a lifelong conservationist. Along with husband John, she spent considerable time in Chiapas, MX, doing conservation work with The Nature Conservancy, as well as installing water purification systems in rural towns. Doris enjoyed birdwatching. Two of her favorite locations for birding were Mendon Ponds Park and Point Pelee National Park in Ontario, CAN. She took particular pleasure in joining John to transform their Perinton property into a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Doris was also a supporter of folk music and member of Golden Link Folk Singing Society. Her favorite folk artist was John McCutcheon.
Family, friends, and food were always foremost in Doris' existence and she particularly thrived when hosting. Her renowned Thanksgiving dinners were an annual celebration that reached beyond immediate family to include international students from RIT and U of R. Other times the holiday meals would include other individuals or families who otherwise might not have a welcoming home. Some of those connections transformed into lifelong friendships.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Cornell Lab of Ornithology, or Kutztown University's College of Education Dean's Scholarship.
Calling hours will be held from 4-7pm Thursday, October 20th at Miller Funeral Home, 3325 Winton Rd South, Rochester, NY.
