Obituary of Eugene Scott Miller, Jr.

Eugene Scott Miller Jr.  - “Gene”

Gene passed away peacefully at age 97 in Fort Collins, Colorado on May 16, 2018. Cecilia, his beloved wife of 61 years, predeceased him as did his parents, Eugene Scott Miller Sr and Edith Colescott Miller. His loving family - son Scott (Connie) of Staten Island, daughter Debbie Arnold (Jim) of Fort Collins, grandchildren Lindsey Berger, Adam Miller, and Stephen Arnold and great-grandchildren Cambree Arnold, Trevor and Mason Berger survive him.

In 1943 Gene graduated from the University of Virginia, married Cele, and moved to Rochester where he took a job with Eastman Kodak. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he worked on the Manhattan Project until the end of World War II.  He and Cele then returned to Rochester where he continued to work as a project engineer at Kodak. He retired in 1983 after 40 years with the company.

Gene served on the East Irondequoit School Board for 7 years, was a hospice volunteer at Sunset House, volunteered at the Irondequoit Public Library, was a counselor for Billy Graham’s Crusade, and Pat Robertson’s 700 Club. His hobby was bird watching.

Gene was a man of unparalleled caring and compassion - a kind, gentle man always ready to lend a hand and share his infectious smile.

He possessed a great faith which sustained him throughout his life. He was very active in his church and served as a warden as well as a lay reader at St Mark’s and St John’s Episcopal Church for many years and Eucharistic Minister for the Episcopal Church Home where he was recognized for 25 years of service.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at the Episcopal Church Home, 505 Mt. Hope Ave, on Saturday, September 15 at 11:00 am. Contributions may be made to the Episcopal Church Home in his memory. Donate Here
