Remembering way back to when Mr.Quallo met our bus to pick up Adam from a class trip. I have a photo somewhere! May your memories overcome today's sadness. Joyce Dustman

My stepdad Carlton Quallo died on Thursday. I've been thinking about a conversation I had with him in 2009. My dad had just died, and I told CQ I was down a dad and could really use another one. He said I would always be his son.
I valued his insights and advice on my life, school and work. His counsel was always even-handed, wise and thoughtful.
I knew he would always take care of my mom and the rest of the family. I admired his inner calm and ability to focus on what was important and let the rest go. Even ALS couldn’t take that away from him.
I loved his eye for photography and his ability to capture a moment and the beauty and spirit of his subjects, in candids and portraits, whether they were family, friends, coworkers, landscapes or pets. He gave us the amazing gift of many thousands of such moments. He wasn't in very many pictures because he was perpetually behind the camera, but I know I won’t be able to resist posting a bunch of my favorite pictures he shot as I come across them in the coming weeks.
I miss playing bid whist and getting his knowledge of the game’s strategy that accompanied the end of each round.
He was a wonderful grandpa. I'll also treasure the fact that through him I gained an amazing additional family of aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.
I miss him.
And now I’m down two dads.
