She was my Second Grade Teacher at VCS (1966). She was by far my favorite and most memorable teacher throughout my years attending there. She recognized that I had an extreme desire for drawing and painting. Where another person may believe that this was less than important, she saw it fit for my expansion and growth with this individual talent. I cannot express how deeply loving and committed to her students that she was. It speaks volumes for itself. At the age of 7, she gave me the freedom to express myself to her, my peers and the School System. Other Teachers recognized, as well, as she conveyed this information. I know she admired me. And over the years, I have admired her. She is a very genuine and unique Teacher that, in my opinion, probably took a risk with Administration to allow her student to become whom they are without restrictions. I have never forgotten her and I can never forget her. She is everything a Teacher should be. Even when I repeated another year of Second Grade at VCS, it was so worth it. To know that she taught me freedom and love at a very young age has always carried with me. She is blessed and she is loved. Sincerely, Dale Gerew Class of 1978

We are deeply saddened by Clare's passing. She taught David and was a wonderful teacher! She always asked about him whenever we ran into her. You are in our prayers. God bless.

Dear Frank, Mike, Nicole, Maureen & John,
I was saddened to learn of Clare's passing. Clare was one of my most favorite colleagues at VCS. Clare gave her all to her teaching position and I always felt reassured when any of my students were moving on to her classroom. I knew that they would grow educationally and receive the nurturing TLC that they deserved. Clare was the "real deal".
Clare knew how important family is and that was her other passion.....something that you
already know.
Merrill and I are in Kaua'i and won't return home until next week, which means we'll miss calling hours and the funeral Mass. I especially am very sorry.
Love,
Dianne Herrick
