I just learned of the passing of Richard. Many years have passed since I saw him, but his antics and love of the blues, and talent will always remain happily in my memories. To all of his family and friends, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully he and Sue are making everyone laugh on the other side.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Rich Tilton - someone who was so inspirational to me as a musician and who was also a great friend. Someone else here said it best when he was not only talented but he that he was just a good person overall. I learned a lot of life-lessons from him as well as guitar licks. I loved that Rich heard me play at some Fiddler's Festival out in Palmyra, back in the early 80's and I was playing my old National Steel Body bottleneck guitar. He ran right over and we ended up playing the rest of the afternoon. He invited me to come to the Brew House on Ridge Road and set in with his band - the St. James Band. Little did I know at the time that the drummer (who is now my brother-in-law) of 30 years, Dave Drum - would leave the band and his brother Bill would join and then I would eventually one day marry Bill! I always credit Rich and the St. James Band for that and bringing us together. And we sure had some rockin' wild times with Tom and Terry Stocum and then Walt "Wally" Kaminsiki and John Klafhen. I had the best times at Rich and Carol's parties in the summer - all the jamming and partying. Those were the days! One of my fondest memories was going with Rich and Carol and the Stocum Brothers to hear the band that did "We Gotta' Get Out of This Place" - my senioritis prevents me from remembering their band name right this minute. Then, Rich, let me borrow a huge stack of vinyl's that I would play and learn from. He had me come out on Saturday to work out guitar parts and showed me lots of leads I still play today thanks to him. He made me a better musician and broadened my listening horizon and taught me what was important in music. I've seen it in a totally different light because of him. Sometimes I hear an old song come on the radio and it will make me think of him (and/or the Stocums) and it takes me back to those places. Rich will be missed but never forgotten. Love and condolences to his family and friends. God Bless him and may he now find peace - Nancy Drum

It is very sad to hear of Rich passing on. We played together with Jeff Cooper and Mark St. James (sadly both also gone). I greatly appreciated him all that he taught me. These are just a few... know the roots of rock, blues! To feel the music and play with both body and soul, to move and groove when playing with no inhibition so to enhance the experience for yourself and the audience and to improvise freely. It was a blast playing music and partying with him. He brought joy to many. RIP Rich you are one of the greats!
With heartfelt condolences to the Tilton family.

I first met Mr. Tilton in the middle 1970s, in the front room of that large 'White Elephant' located on east river road.(Genesee Inn Maybe???)
He introduced himself as 'Rich', and we had a fine conversation about Converse sneakers. Minutes later he was blasting out his great covers of " Wine, Wine, Wine" and "Doodley Squat" with the St. James band. My point is, any man that can leave a really good impression.. even 40+ years later... is a special human being. Thank you, Rich. RIP

Sending my thoughts for the family and friends of the loss of your loved one Richard. I am from Henrietta my whole life and have been around and lived here a long time have seen Richard play various gigs and do remember the St James Band when they used to jam in the apartments behind the Henrietta park. Again I am very sorry for you loss of such a talented man who make his way ups and downs to become a greater person and still was so very young. I pray for you to have peace and comfort at this difficult time.

Last time I saw you, you were having some brews at the Creekside in Rush. Our lives circled each other but rarely met. I remember when The Beatles were the rage, your hair was just like them. You came to a few parties at my house in high school. So hard to believe you have passed on. Peace!!

Rich, we lost touch over the last 50 years. I wanted you, your family, as well as, our friends and classmates to know you earned my respect back in the locker room at school. Some younger kid was being teased with a jock strap. You intervened on that kid’s behalf and stopped the bullying. You were so courageous that you made fun of yourself with the jock and made the bullies feel small. Over all these years I have admired you for what you did that day. You did the right thing even when you could have let the kid get bullied and walked awaw. Instead, you stood with the kid against bullying. To this day I am proud of you and for what you did for a bullying victim. As a School Principal, I never forgot your example.
I’m only sorry I never got to tell you this when you were still alive.
Rest In Peace Rich! You deserve a special place in heaven

Had the pleasure of playing with Rich and the rest of the St James Band when my brother left the band. What can I say about Rich? I can remember meeting Rich when they used to practice in my parents basement. That was years before the St James Band when Mark was still alive. I had mentioned to my parents the other day of Rich's passing and they can remember the "Good old days of the band in the basement" My father who just turned 93 remembers finding all his booze behind the bar missing and replaced with water, I'll bet you can guess who the culprit was. When I started playing with the band we would often practice at Rich and Carols place in Avon and I can remember Tad trying to bite my leg as I was playing (Bet you don't remember that huh Tad) I was also introduced to my now wife Nancy though Rich and we played together in one rendition of the band. Let me just say we had some wild and crazy nights at gigs down on Lake Ave. I'm sure everyone has a few wild and crazy stories about Rich.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to be Rich's friend and fellow musician along with Tom and Terry Stocum. And I regret not getting up to see him during his last few years.
Rest in peace Rich. You will not be forgotten that's for sure
