I met Mr. Vandelinder as a naive eighth grader in his home room at Monroe High School in 1961. At first I was a little frightened of him, but as I got older, he became a true inspiration and mentor to me. He encouraged me in my education and sports. I probably never would have attended college or lettered in three sports had it not been for his caring and mentorship. I retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2006 and wish that I could have shared my military experiences with him.

when i was a senior at jeff, i was selected to interview for a scholarship to st.lawrence university but it required travelling to new york city. mr. vanderlinder knew that i had never flown on an airplane and had never been to new york. he wanted me to do well at the interview. so he took me, at his own expense, on a practice trip to new york - he and i flew to new york for an overnight so that i had some experience with flying and had a bit of exposure to new york. i got the scholarship and for the past 30 years have been a practicing law in downtown boston. thank you mr. vanderlinder and may you rest in peace.

On a Thursday afternoon during my junior year, Mr V asked what I had planned for college. The fact that he knew me was a little surprising at the time. When I told him that I had an appointment in two days to take the test to enlist in the Navy, he thought I should reconsider and look at attending a military academy. On his advice, I changed my plans. I ended up attending the Coast Guard Academy and had a successful 21 year career as an officer and Coast Guard Helicopter Pilot. His insight and caring changed the course of my life. I feel fortunate that we were able to stay in touch over the years through Christmas Cards and the occasional visit. God Bless you Mr "V".

Mr "V" cared about every student that came through the doors of Jefferson High and did his best to keep all of us on the "straight and narrow". His influence on education has improved the quality of the students that went on to "be somebody" in our society.

To let you know I worked along with my dad Roy, on Roy's Cottages on Conesus Lake, all us kids did. Dad and I helped him with his Big Yard Sale about 15 years ago. My dad Roy worked for Roy and Lucile first and then Roy when he took over the cottages. Dad would pick up Roy and bring him out to check on the cottages then they and sometimes I would be along and we would have lunch at the Mt Hope dinner near strong hosp. Oh the memories. Dad is recovering from a heart attack and complications so he is not able to send his sympathy's but I will for him. Dad would call to keep up with Roy till Dad got sick in April. Roy was a good guy. He will be missed. Cindy Akers and Roy Patterson Sr.
