Obituary of Edward J. Sloan

Passed away March 11, 2012 at age 95. He was predeceased by his wife, Imelda (Ehmann); brother, James. He is survived by his eight children, Jeanne, Edward Jr (Pixie), Gary (Judy), Greg (Karen), Mary Beth (Don) Stiner, Deborah (Steve) Sandler, Kevin, and JoAnne (Mike) Russo; brother, William (Jean) Sloan; proud grandfather to 15; great grandfather to 19; many nieces & nephews. Ed's source of pride was his beloved family. He cherished his family and was always proud of their accomplishments, especially that all eight of his children graduated from college. Ed was a life long Rochesterian and a graduate of St Boniface School, Aquinas Institute, Rochester Business School, and attended Niagara University. The bulk of his working career was spent at Langie/Mobil Fuel Service (36 yrs) as an accountant/comptroller. During WWII he was a First Sergeant in the National Guard. His entire life was devoted to community service, particularly St. Boniface Church. He was a member of the finance board for over 45 years; chairman of the St Boniface School board from 1981-1994, led the campaign to save the school from closing in 1999, and served as business manager of the church for 24 years. He was also a member of the St Boniface Men's Club for over 60 years and served as an officer or director in all but 7 of those years. He actively served on several boards in the community, including Catholic Family Center, Becket Hall, and St John's Home. He worked for many years on the United Way Campaign, the Lend-a-Hand Campaign, and the Old Newsboy Day. starting in 1942 he was politically active on the Monroe County Democratic committee in various capacities. He served as the treasurer and vice chairman of the old 13th ward Democratic Committee. Scouting was also a big focus in Ed's life for over 60 years. He served as Troop 200 chairman, chairman of the Catholic Committee on scouting for the Otetiana Council, and chairman of the Diocesan Catholic Committee. He was awarded the St George Emblem and the Silver Beaver award for service to youth through scouting. Another major accomplishment was co-founder and president of the Southside Youth Association, where he served for over 30 years. He was honored in 1971 as the Man of the Year by the St Boniface Men's Club and received the Catherine Friess award in 1999 for Outstanding Contributions to the Rochester Catholic Schools. He was proudest of the positive effect his contributions had on the children of Rochester. If it takes a village to raise a child, Ed Sloan certainly did his part. Many will never know or realize the effect he had on their lives. His family will receive friends and relatives on FRIDAY, (March 16) at Miller Funeral Homes, Inc. (3325 Winton Rd.
